In Week 5, Amon-Ra St. Brown flew the German flag high in the NFL. Two German stars had to sit out the weekend.
Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to dream of the Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions are currently unstoppable, with another victory in Week 5 of the NFL. It was their fourth in a row and another sporting highlight. From a German perspective, the wide receiver was once again the highlight, as two other German players were sidelined with injuries over the weekend.
Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions)
Things are currently running smoothly in the NFL for Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Detroit Lions. The Lions secured their fourth consecutive victory against the Cincinnati Bengals, seemingly putting their opening defeat to the Green Bay Packers completely behind them. They won 37-24 against the Bengals.
St. Brown racked up an impressive 100 yards, but failed to score a touchdown for the second time this season.
Given the team’s current success, however, he is unlikely to be too bothered. The Lions and St. Brown are on course for the playoffs.
Brandon Coleman (Washington Commanders)
There was good news and bad news for Brandon Coleman. First, the good news: the Washington Commanders won their third game of the season, beating the Los Angeles Chargers 27-10.
The bad news: for the third time in a row, the German left guard was listed as “inactive” by the Washington Commanders’ management. The 24-year-old has not played since Week 2.
Jakob Johnson (Houston Texans)
The situation is similar for Jakob Johnson. The Texans celebrated a clear 44-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. They humiliated the home team and secured their second win of the season.
However, Johnson was absent, as he was the week before. The fullback, who made it into the regular squad via the practice squad, remains on the injured reserve list. This means he will miss at least four games. Two are now over. However, it is unclear exactly how long he will be out for.
Germans in the NFL practice squads
Lenny Krieg: After a strong performance at the combine, Krieg signed a three-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in March. On August 26, he was released as part of the final roster cuts, but was re-added to the practice squad a day later.
However, after the dismissal of veteran kicker Younghoe Koo, it was not the German who was appointed as his successor, but Parker Romo.
After a strong performance in week two, however, Romo disappointed in the 0-30 disaster against the Carolina Panthers, missing two field goals in the first quarter.
However, there are no signs yet that Romo will also have to pack his bags. Perhaps Krieg will have another chance to be named to the 53-man roster after all.
For the remaining Germans, it is still important to give their all in the practice squads and recommend themselves for a spot on the 53-man roster. This applies to tight end Maximilian Mang (Indianapolis Colts), linebacker Julius Welschof (Pittsburgh Steelers), offensive tackle Lorenz Metz (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), offensive tackle Leander Wiegand (New York Jets), and offensive tackle Kilian Zierer (San Francisco 49ers).
