49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell caused a scandal against the LA Rams by refusing to play. His franchise is only announcing serious consequences.
Week 15 has barely begun, but the scandal of the day already seems to be over. 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell obviously couldn’t take it anymore against the Rams. The linebacker announced during the game that he no longer felt like playing.
“He said he didn’t want to play today,” head coach Kyle Shanahan explained at the post-game press conference. When asked at what point the star defensive player told the coaching staff, Shanahan replied, ”It was in the third quarter.”
Campbell did not tell his boss the reason for his actions. The consequences are still pending. Shanahan explained: “I don’t know if we’re going to release him, we’ll come up with something.”
“He hurt the team by doing it, it was selfish,” criticized cornerback Charvarius Ward, who also suspected: “Now he’s definitely going to be released.”
Campbell scandal: 49ers announce summary trial
The 49ers star has not yet been fired, but on Friday Shanahan indicated that he does not expect Campbell to be hired beyond week 16:
“You heard it from me last night, you heard it from our players. His actions on the field, it’s not something you can do to your team or your teammates […] we’ll handle the situation appropriately.” In addition to a dismissal, the Niners could theoretically also consider a suspension without pay for behavior that is harmful to the team.
Campbell joined the San Francisco franchise in March, when they were looking for a replacement for long-term injured Dre Greenlaw. The linebacker signed a one-year contract worth five million dollars.
