The Super Bowl is coming up! This year, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will meet, unfortunately without any German players in either squad. But how many Germans have already won the title?
The Super Bowl will be held for the 48th time at the end of this NFL season. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will meet at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Every final has produced its own stories. Sometimes German players have also been involved.
But how many professionals from Germany have won the Super Bowl so far and can adorn themselves with one of the coveted rings?
For many fans, the answer is clear: one! Namely Sebastian Vollmer. The offensive tackle won the title with the New England Patriots in 2015 and 2017.
While he was still in the starting line-up for his first title, he won his second Super Bowl on the sidelines, as he was unable to play a game in the entire season due to injury.
But Vollmer is not the only German to win the title. Markus Koch, who won the Vince Lombardi Trophy as a defensive lineman with the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders) in 1988 and 1992, is far too often forgotten.
Because Koch moved to the USA at the age of four and celebrated his successes before the internet, the now 60-year-old rarely receives recognition in the German media.
The same applies to Tom Nütten. The son of a German mother, he was born in Ohio, grew up in Oelde in North Rhine-Westphalia and returned to the USA at the age of 16. There he won the title with the St. Louis Rams in January 2000.
Mark Nzeocha was the last German to have the chance to play in the Super Bowl. The linebacker reached the NFL final with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, but was beaten 20:31 by the Kansas City Chiefs.
