AFC and NFC

The NFL’s competitive structure is based on the division into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Both are divided into four divisions. In the regular season, a total of 32 teams from eight divisions compete for a place in the playoffs. Each team plays 17 games.

Both conferences hold their own playoffs. Seven teams qualify in each conference and are placed in a seeded list based on their record in the regular season.

The four division champions are seeded in the playoffs. The division winner with the best record is seeded 7 (NFC: Panthers, AFC: Chargers). This means that it is possible that the seven most successful teams in a conference do not automatically enter the playoffs.

With the same win-loss record, various criteria decide the allocation of places – from the direct comparison to the conference record and the strength of schedule.

Divisional Round

Divisional Round. In this round, the 1 team gets into the action and hosts the lowest seeded team that prevailed in the Wild Card Round. The second game will be contested by the other two winning teams from the Wild Card Round, with the higher seeded team enjoying home court privileges.

Conference Championships

Semifinals. The winning teams from each Conference’s Divisional Playoffs will meet to determine the two Super Bowl participants. The higher seeded team will have home field.

Super Bowl

The Final. The winner of the NFC will meet the winner of the AFC. Super Bowl LVI will take place on 13 February 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
