Joe Mixon and the Cincinnati Bengals did not manage to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the Super Bowl 2022 against the Los Angeles Rams. A small consolation: the running back still made Super Bowl history.
Munich/Los Angeles – Joe Mixon made history with a successful touchdown pass in Super Bowl 2022.
The Cincinnati Bengals running back is only the fifth non-quarterback to achieve this in the Super Bowl.
During the second quarter, with the score 13-3 in favour of the Los Angeles Rams, quarterback Joe Burrow passed the ball to Mixon, who faked a run, drawing the rushing defence to him. But instead of running, Mixon threw the ball patterned to the right corner of the Rams end zone to a completely free Tee Higgins and a touchdown.
First fifth non-quarterback with touchdown pass
With this touchdown pass, Mixon became the fifth non-quarterback and second running back with a successful touchdown pass in a Super Bowl.
Previously, Eagles tight end Trey Burton (“Philly Special”, 2018), Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El (2006), Rams running back Lawrence McCutcheon (1980) and Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse (1978) had accomplished this.
Despite the touchdown pass and 72 rushing yards, even Mixon couldn’t prevent the Bengals’ 20-23 loss to the Rams.
He still wrote a piece of Super Bowl history.
