NFL: Playoff record smashed well before Super Bowl 2026

A record has already been broken in the NFL playoffs – and that’s well before the Super Bowl.

A special statistic in the NFL playoffs – and the postseason isn’t even over yet. There are still three games to play before the new Super Bowl winner is determined, but the playoff phase so far has already produced a record. In the ten playoff games played over the past two weeks, there have been a total of 15 lead changes in the fourth quarter – more than ever before in an NFL postseason.

The previous record was set in the 2007/08 playoffs with a total of ten lead changes in the fourth quarter, including three in the Super Bowl, when the Giants ended the Patriots’ perfect season.

Playoff milestone broken early

That milestone was broken early in the current season after just four games, which saw a total of twelve lead changes.

These included four changes in the Rams’ victory over the Panthers, four more in the Bills’ victory over the Jaguars, three in the 49ers’ victory over the Eagles, and one lead change in the Bears’ victory over the Packers.

In the divisional round, there were two changes in the Broncos’ victory over the Bills and one in the Rams’ victory over the Bears.
