Plaxico Burress played a crucial role in the New York Giants’ Super Bowl victory in the 2007 season. But now he had to part with his ring from the NFL final.
Plaxico Burress had a remarkable NFL career. Between 2000 and 2012, he played in the best football league in the world, and the wide receiver cracked the 1,000 receiving yards mark in a season four times.
After five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he transferred to the New York Giants, where he celebrated his greatest success by far. In the 2007 season, the Giants, as rank outsiders, won the Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots.
Burress played a crucial role in this, as he was the one who caught the decisive touchdown 35 seconds before the end of the game to secure a 17-14 victory.
Traditionally, Burress received a Super Bowl ring as a personal trophy, just like every other team member. But now he has to part with this precious memento.
Only a Super Bowl ring brought in more money
As auction house Heritage Auctions announced, the ring was auctioned for the whopping sum of $280,600 – only once in history has a Super Bowl ring brought in more.
In 2022, the ring of Don McCafferty, who won the title in Super Bowl V in January 1971 against the Dallas Cowboys as head coach of the then Baltimore Colts, was sold for $300,000.
Burress, now 47, is said to have earned more than $30 million over the course of his career, but has repeatedly made headlines for his financial troubles. In addition, he was the subject of several civil suits and had tax debts.
