Sad news from the football world. Johnie Cooks, former Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants, has died at the age of 64. This was announced by his former university. The reason for the passing was not given.
“Johnie Cooks was undoubtedly among the best players to ever wear the maroon and white jerseys, and he was one of the most decorated college football players of his time,” Mississippi State University athletic director Zac Selmon said in a statement.
He added: “He truly accomplished everything in his career. As a Bulldog, he won award after award, and later in the NFL, he won the Super Bowl. Johnie will always be remembered as a legend of our university. “
Johnie Cooks won Super Bowl with Giants
In his college career, the linebacker earned three All-SEC honors. His 24 sacks are the fourth most in university history, and his 392 tackles are the fifth most. He once even made 24 tackles in just a single game.
Drafted second overall to the Baltimore Colts in the 1982 draft, he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season. He played seven years with the Colts, during which time the franchise moved to Indianapolis.
In 1988 he was released by Indy and subsequently signed with the Giants, with whom he won the Super Bowl in 1990. After a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns, he finally ended his ten-year NFL career.
