The Carolina Panthers win the NFL Munich Game 2024 against the New York Giants. The fourth regular season game on German soil went into overtime for the first time.
The team of head coach Dave Canales defeated the Giants 20-17 in overtime in front of 70,132 fans at the sold-out Allianz Arena.
Panthers quarterback Bryce Young made hardly any mistakes, completing 60 percent of his passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones completed 190 yards and a 59 percent pass rate, with the 27-year-old suffering two interceptions.
It was the Panthers’ second straight win, and they are now 3-7. The Giants, who were without German Jakob Johnson in the lineup, are at least temporarily the worst team in the league with a record of 2-8.
NFL in Munich: Panthers rookie scores first TD
Ja’Tavion Sanders scored the first touchdown in the middle of the first quarter. The rookie tight end for the Panthers caught a 5-yard pass from Bryce Young to make it 7-0. Prior to that, running back Chuba Hubbard had covered the field in double-quick with two 26-yard runs.
Kicker Eddy Pineiro extended the lead to 10-0 at the beginning of the second quarter. The Giants offense had managed just 16 total yards at that point.
On the next drive, Jones completed a few passes, but Graham Gano missed the field goal from 43 yards out.
Shortly before halftime, the Giants avoided an even bigger disaster when Jones committed an avoidable interception in the red zone. The half-time score remained 10-0.
NFL: First overtime in Germany
On the first drive after the break and the halftime show by Machine Gun Kelly, the Giants made their first mark on the scoreboard: Running back Tyrone Tracy found the end zone from 32 yards out – just 10:7.
But the Panthers struck back immediately. Young ran the ball 24 yards into the red zone, Hubbard completed a few plays later from a yard out – 17:7.
Then again New York: Jones ran the ball into the end zone from two yards after a strong drive – only 17:14.
Two plays later Hubbard fumbled – the Giants took over in the Panthers’ red zone. A golden opportunity to turn the game around – but Jones threw his second interception (this time receiver Tracy was the culprit), Carolina got off with a black eye.
For the time being. The Giants got the ball back and moved into field goal range. With ten seconds left on the clock, Gano made it 17-17 from 42 yards out. It went into overtime, the first in the fourth NFL game on German soil.
There, the Giants had the ball first. And they turned it over on the first play. A fumble by tight end Jason Tracy put the Panthers within field goal range, and Kellen Winslow kicked the game into extra time from 36 yards out.
Panthers and Giants: What’s next
Both the Panthers and the Giants don’t have to hurry back to the US: both teams have a bye in Week 11.
On matchday 12, Carolina hosts the Kansas City Chiefs, while New York takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium.
