Urban Meyer has not been head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for some time. But a report now brings new, disturbing details to light. Among other things, Meyer allegedly did not know Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams
Munich – Urban Meyer was granted only a brief guest appearance as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to “The Athletic”, Meyer’s tenure in the NFL was probably even more chaotic than originally assumed. According to the report, the long-time college coach started his new job with absurd gaps in his knowledge.
He apparently did not know star players like Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams), Deebo Samuel (San Francisco 49ers) or Jamal Adams (Seattle Seahawks). “The Athletic” reports Meyer asked one of his staff members during the season, “Who’s that guy with the 99 on the Rams? I heard he could be a problem for us”. The number 99 is worn by L.A. Donald – a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, after all.
Urban Meyer reportedly made Jaguars pro cry
The treatment of players inside the Jaguars’ dressing room was also reportedly devastating. The report says that the head coach criticised an unnamed player so harshly that he started crying. Meyer then stormed off without a word, while his teammates consoled their colleague.
“The Athletic” quotes an anonymous member of the coaching staff who speaks of the “most toxic atmosphere” he has ever experienced.
D.J. Chark, on the other hand, is named. “There were players who were scared for their jobs. Coaches that Meyer bad-mouthed in front of us. I can imagine what went on behind closed doors. I’m honestly surprised he didn’t get fired this long,” said the wide receiver, who was traded from the Jaguars to the Detroit Lions this offseason.
Meyer failed miserably with the Jacksonville Jaguars
Meyer’s response to the report is still pending. In January, he had called his time with the Jaguars the “worst stage of my career” on the “Don’t at Me” podcast. He admitted to struggling with depression and apologised to the franchise and the fans.
Meyer was fired last season after 13 games of the season. In addition to the poor sporting record – only two wins in eleven defeats – his tenure was marked by numerous scandals.
Among other things, he had his team flown back alone after an away game and was filmed dancing with a young lady while Meyer’s wife waited for him at home. Ex-Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo also reported that Meyer kicked him before a game.
