The curious double punt in the Seattle Seahawks game against the LA Rams has caused plenty of confusion. The NFL is already discussing the possible ramifications of the controversial rule.
Munich – Michael Dickson’s double punt in the Seattle Seahawks’ Thursday night game caused a lot of discussion.
His punt was initially blocked by the Rams’ defence before Dickson collected the ball and kicked it forward another time.
Many coaches did not know the rule
Normally, two forward plays within one play are not allowed in the NFL. However, an exception applies if it is a punt or drop kick and the player is behind the line of scrimmage.
As Mike Florio of “Pro Football Talk” now reports, many coaches were not even aware of this rule. The NFL referee department apparently received several calls from special teams coaches after the game. The rule, in fact, brings with it other possible scenarios.
So after every punt and field goal, another punt, kick or drop kick could be kicked. If the dropkick flies through the goalposts after a blocked field goal, it would still count for three points.
The last time a drop kick was converted was over 15 years ago. Doug Flutie scored an extra point for the New England Patriots in curious fashion in January 2006.
You don’t see this often in football 🏈
