US President Joe Biden has admonished the National Football League (NFL) for more diversity in its coaching hires ahead of the 56th Super Bowl.
Inglewood – US President Joe Biden has urged the National Football League (NFL) to increase diversity in its coaching hires ahead of the 56th Super Bowl.
In light of recent allegations of racism by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, Biden said in an NBC interview on Sunday that the league was lagging behind in hiring people from minority groups.
“The league is made up of so many dark-skinned athletes, it’s so diverse – the idea that there shouldn’t be enough African-American coaches to lead teams is absurd,” Biden said ahead of the season finale between the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, California. This, he said, was required by “decency alone. “
NFL boss Roger Goodell wants to promote African-American coaches
Flores is suing the NFL for alleged racial discrimination. Commissioner Roger Goodell has already promised further action to promote African-American coaches.
Already, the “Rooney Rule” requires teams to invite a certain quota of people from minority groups to recruitment interviews. According to Flores, however, this sometimes only happens in sham interviews.
