O.J. Simpson, former football superstar and notorious felon, has died. His family announced that Simpson succumbed to cancer on Wednesday at the age of 76, surrounded by his loved ones

Simpson was one of the best running backs in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers in the 1970s and was voted the league’s most valuable player in 1973. However, he became known to the world 15 years after the end of his career.

His escape in a white Ford Bronco from 20 police cars in Beverly Hills was broadcast live on television; he was suspected of murdering his ex-wife and her companion. Simpson was acquitted in a spectacular circumstantial trial, but later ended up in prison for a robbery in Las Vegas. He was released in 2017 – for the last seven years of his eventful life
