In addition to the dispute with franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers are facing the next drama. According to a report, talks on a long-term contract extension with star receiver Davante Adams have broken down
The Green Bay Packers’ offseason is truly not shaping up to be easy. With franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers already causing stress and his future still unresolved, the drama could continue with his favourite pass receiver.
Packers don’t push the pain envelope
It seemed clear: After two outstanding seasons in a row, the Green Bay Packers and wide receiver Davante Adams agree on a contract this offseason, as his current contract expires after next season. Based on his performance, many pundits expected him to become the NFL’s highest-paid receiver.
However, as NFL insider Ian Rapoport now reports, both parties have broken off contract talks with immediate effect. Moreover, they are not to be resumed in the near future. The negotiations had dragged on for several months, and now both sides are at a “bad point”, according to the report;
It goes on to say that Adam’s demands to be promoted to the highest-paid wide receiver based on performance have not been met. The Packers’ offers are said to have been anything but to the liking of the player’s ideas.
Next offensive departure looms
Already this offseason, the Packers have struggled with cap issues and have had to let go of key contributors like centre Corey Linsley. According to Rapoport’s report, the Packers’ “classic model” does not allow them to pay Adams that much money.
Adams will earn just over $12.6 million next season. With the 28-year-old’s contract expiring next season, he could hit the market as a free agent. Other teams, such as the Las Vegas Raiders, have already lodged their interest for the upcoming free agency in recent weeks.
