Washington Commanders no longer award number 9 to Sonny Jurgensen

The Washington Commanders are honouring their former quarterback Sonny Jurgensen with a special ceremony. The announcement is also a birthday present.

The jersey of the legendary quarterback with the number 9 will no longer be given away by the Washington Commanders.

Jurgensen, who turned 88 on Tuesday, played for the then-Washington Redskins between 1964 and 1974 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall Fame in 1983.

The franchise from the US capital announced in a best-of video of Jurgensen on his birthday on Twitter that it would no longer be awarding his jersey.

The ceremony is scheduled for the Commanders’ final home game of the Regular Season on January 8.

Jurgensen, who scored a total of 270 touchdowns in 218 games, played for the Philadelphia Eagles for six seasons prior to his time in Washington.
