Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is still interested in buying the Washington Commanders. He’s even said to be willing to sell the Washington Post in order to come clean with Dan Snyder
Is Jeff Bezos suddenly making himself a top candidate to take over Washington Commanders? According to the “New York Post”, the multi-billionaire is said to be toying with the idea of selling the Washington Post. By doing so, the Amazon boss hopes to come to terms with the current owner of the Commanders, Dan Snyder, and thus have better chances of a purchase.
Money, on the other hand, plays a rather subordinate role. Bezos has an estimated fortune of more than 110 billion euros and bought the American daily for about 230 million euros in 2013. Commanders, on the other hand, is worth about five to six billion euros – peanuts for Bezos.
But according to the report, the once richest person in the world is more interested in a “clean path” to a deal. Snyder has been at loggerheads with Bezos ever since reports in the Washington Post revealed a toxic management culture at Commanders. Among other things, Snyder allegedly overlooked sexual harassment.
Snyder: Is Bezos forcing him to sell?
In response, according to a report in The New York Times, Snyder suspected Bezos of promoting this coverage to get him to sell the club.
A deal with Bezos therefore seemed out of the question: “It will never happen. Dan Snyder detests the Washington Post. There’s no way he would sell to the owner of that paper,” a source told “NBC Sports” reporter Peter King. Even after a December deadline for offers to buy the Commanders passed, the Amazon founder was reportedly not among the potential buyers.
Bezos facing sale of Washington Post?
But as a source told The New York Post, there could now be a turnaround. “I think Bezos’ people could go to Dan and say, as a gesture of goodwill, ‘We’re selling the paper.’ I think that would go down very well with Dan.”
While the 59-year-old is a big fan of the NFL, he says there are no plans to sell the Washington Post himself.
