Head Coach Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders has explained himself after the alleged criticism of his quarterback Carson Wentz. According to the report, Rivera was misunderstood and did not mean to criticize Wentz.
Munich/Washington – After the 17-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera was asked why his franchise was doing so poorly compared to the other teams in the NFC East.
Rivera’s answer was subsequently unequivocal: “The quarterback. “

Washington Commanders: critical statement Ron Rivera causes uproar
In the United States, the statement, which seemed to be specifically directed against playmaker Carson Wentz, caused a lot of commotion. Among others, former Washington quarterback Alex Smith was massively upset.
Now Rivera has once again spoken out on the matter and declared that he has apologised to Wentz.
“Carson and I had a nice conversation and I think we’re ready to go,” he told reporters. Moreover, the head coach explained that his statement was actually meant quite differently.
Ron Rivera: “Said things that were misinterpreted”
According to his own statement, he only wanted to express that the quarterbacks of the other teams have been playing with their teammates for a longer period of time and feel much more comfortable accordingly. Wentz, whom the Commanders only signed last offseason, is still relatively new.
The 29-year-old himself was unaware of his coach’s comment and was only informed of it by a spokesperson for the franchise.
“The coach brought it up, but for me it was nothing to worry about,” Wentz told journalists.
He added: “The coach is a very straightforward, open guy. He brought it up in the team meeting, said what he meant by it, which I thought was really cool. I’m very confident about that. “
But even though Rivera explained his statement to the team and to Wentz, the coach was still upset in the end.
Especially at himself: “I told my players that I said things that were misinterpreted. But I didn’t put them right. So it’s up to me. I should have known better. “
Washington Commanders: team stands behind head coach Ron Rivera
Meanwhile, Rivera’s correction was met with a positive response from the team. Backup playmaker Taylor Heinicke said, “It meant a lot to the whole team. For anyone who didn’t know what he meant by it, it was good to hear it from him.”
Heinicke isn’t worried about Wentz over the comment, by the way. According to Heinicke, the long-time Eagles playmaker stays away from social media and thus doesn’t notice the controversy that Rivera’s response has caused.
