Dan Quinn’s appearance on the sidelines of the Washington Commanders’ rookie minicamp is causing heated discussions. The new coach’s actions could have consequences for the team

This performance by Dan Quinn had it all. However, the new head coach of the Washington Commanders caused less of a stir with his statements than with his outfit.

When he appeared before the press on the sidelines of the Commanders’ rookie minicamp, he wore a T-shirt with the word “Commanders” on it. So far, so normal. However, two feathers were emblazoned above the lettering next to the “W” logo.

The logo on the shirt thus combined the current emblem with the former logo of the team, which until a few years ago was still called the Redskins and whose logo also featured two feathers.

There was a huge outcry on social media. While some users celebrated the T-shirt, others like Jason Reid from “ESPN” claimed that team officials should have banned Quinn from wearing the shirt. Especially since it is not officially licensed by the team.

Quinn has thus given further momentum to a discussion that had been gathering pace since the team was taken over by a group of investors led by Josh Harris in July last year.

As the new owner of the capital city franchise, Harris himself had already mentioned the old team name “Redskins” several times in conversations with fans.

The team only abandoned the name in 2020 under pressure from society and sponsors because it was perceived as racist by the Native Americans.

Quinn’s appearance will probably still have consequences. Because his T-shirt, which infringes the organization’s trademark rights, is likely to sell very well from now on.
