Washington Commanders: Dan Snyder confirms sale of the franchise

The Washington Commanders will be sold. This was announced by still team owner Dan Snyder. Only the league still has to agree to the sale.

The Washington Commanders have a new owner. Dan and Tanya Snyder announced in a release that the franchise has been sold to a consortium led by investor Josh Harris.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Josh Harris, a local native, and his impressive group of partners to sell the Commanders franchise. We look forward to the transfer soon and look forward to cheering on and supporting Josh and the team in the years to come,” Snyder said in the released statement.

According to “ESPN,” Harris is expected to pay around $6.05 billion (5.57 billion euros) for the Commanders, beating out Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos, who until recently was also rumored to be a possible buyer.

Harris already owns other US franchises

Officially, however, the deal is not yet official. For that, the league must first approve the sale. However, this is considered a mere formality.

With the purchase of the Commanders, Harris secures his third franchise in one of the four major US sports leagues. In 2011, he and Dave Blitzer led an investment group that bought the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA). In 2013, he added the New Jersey Devils (NHL). He also holds around 18 percent of the English Premier League club Crystal Palace.
