Tom Brady: Tampa Bay Buccaneers have eyes on a successor

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to plan for the post-Brady era in Free Agency. The team is eyeing a successor for the retired superstar, according to a report.

The job is thankless. Because you can really only lose as Tom Brady’s successor.

But of course, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers must move on after the quarterback superstar’s retirement, especially at the playmaker position. The Bucs don’t want to rely on Kyle Trask alone, even though the former second-round pick has now spent two years learning behind Brady.

Instead, they’re looking to bring in a veteran in free agency, which starts next week. And according to the NFL Network, the Buccaneers already have their eyes on a concrete successor: Baker Mayfield.

While there appears to be plenty of support for Trask with the Bucs, Mayfield is expected to be brought to Florida as a possible number one quarterback to compete with Trask in the offseason. Teams will be allowed to officially negotiate starting Monday, with free agency officially beginning Wednesday.

Baker Mayfield: eventful NFL career

Mayfield is already looking at an eventful NFL career at 27 years old. In 2018, he was selected first overall in the draft by the Cleveland Browns and led the previously chronically unsuccessful team to the playoffs in the 2020 season for the first time since 2002.

Before last season, however, he was run off the court in Cleveland and moved to the Carolina Panthers. Things didn’t really work out for him there either, though, which is why he asked to be released. For the remaining five games of the season he replaced the injured Matthew Stafford for the Los Angeles Rams, winning two games.
