Manchester United has been up for sale for months. Now a sheikh is apparently pursuing a special plan to get to the best football league in the world by buying the club.
Is this plan working?
It is no longer a secret that the Glazer family wants to sell Manchester United. There are several interested parties for the traditional British club.
Among them is Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is apparently pursuing a very special plan to be able to acquire United. The Sun”, citing sources, reports that he wants to offer the owners a treat – in the form of NFL games in the Middle East.
NFL games in Qatar?
The Glazer family does not only own the Red Devils, but also the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to the report, the sheikh has already increased his offer to five billion pounds (just under 5.7 billion euros) and would probably not only like to acquire the Premier League club, but also open the door for the best football league in the world.
So the billionaire is said to believe that a possible United purchase could also set in motion a relationship that would make it easier to host NFL games in the Arab world.
For years now, the NFL and team owners like Joel Glazer have been trying to boost the NFL’s popularity by hosting games abroad. Best example: the London Games and the first game on German soil last November.
Buccaneers-Owners want to sell United
“Sheikh Jassim has made it very clear that he wants to buy the club and has the money to do so. He is impressed with the Glazers and would like to work with them in the future,” the English tabloid’s source is quoted as saying. “Part of his suggestion was that the Glazers could bring their NFL team to Qatar to host a game at the national stadium in Doha.”
He added: “This would help cement Qatar’s reputation as a host for sporting events and give the Glazers an opportunity to spread their NFL brand and make money.”
So the sheikh is said to have offered to include a clause in a takeover bid guaranteeing this, “and the Glazers like that”.
The Buccaneers were one of two teams, along with the Seattle Seahawks, on the field for the first Germany game in Munich. Led by the now retired Tom Brady, they won the game 21:16.
