Seattle Seahawks: Ex-player Chad Wheeler goes to prison for a long time

Former NFL pro Chad Wheeler is facing more than six years in prison for assault and domestic violence. Wheeler played for the New York Giants and the Seattle Seahawks.

Former NFL professional Chad Wheeler has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for assault and domestic violence in a particularly serious case. This sentence was handed down by a court in Seattle.

The 30-year-old was accused of severely abusing his girlfriend at the time in 2021. The jury came to the conclusion that Wheeler had used “violence or means likely to cause death”.

Accordingly, Wheeler was found guilty of a Class A felony, which carries a minimum sentence of five years. According to “ESPN”, the prosecution had even demanded a prison sentence of nine years.

In addition to the 81 months that the court ultimately imposed, a further 36 months were suspended. He must also undergo a psychiatric examination and pay compensation for pain and suffering, which has yet to be determined.

Wheeler, then a backup tackle for the Seattle Seahawks, was arrested in January 2021 after he was accused of pushing the woman to the ground and choking her twice until she lost consciousness.

The victim, Alleah Taylor, told police that when she regained consciousness for the second time, Wheeler was surprised she was still alive. Taylor suffered a fractured humerus and a dislocated elbow, among other injuries.

Wheeler himself, who suffers from bipolar disorder, claimed to have experienced a “manic episode” during the incident.

In 2017, Wheeler signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants, and two years later he went to the Seahawks. He initially remained on the practice squad there, but was occasionally promoted to the active squad. After the incident became known, the Seahawks parted ways with him.
