Sean McVay could resign as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams after this season despite a long-term contract. According to the report, the 36-year-old has not yet made a decision on his future.
From Super Bowl champion to disaster season. Hero to Zero.
Or to put it in other words: The Los Angeles Rams’ season.
After securing the title at home in SoFi Stadium back in February, the franchise hit rock bottom less than a year later, crashing out of the playoffs with a record of 5-11 before the final day of play.
It therefore seems only logical that the Rams will put all the puzzle pieces of the roster and also the coaching team to the test after the end of the season. This also applies to head coach Sean McVay, whose future in Hollywood is hanging in the balance.
Sean McVay: Time as head coach of the Rams over?
“ESPN” cites multiple sources who agree that the 36-year-old will take some time after the franchise’s final game of the season at the Seattle Seahawks to decide whether he will return to the franchise in 2023.
According to the report, McVay has been pushing the decision back and forth so far and needs time to process all that has happened over the past year. And the weighing apparently isn’t limited to on-field work.
Winning the Super Bowl, working in television, getting married, watching his wife’s homeland, Ukraine, under attack, losing his grandfather, and then coaching a team that fell short by leaps and bounds after achieving the greatest possible success.
Too much to make a quick decision.
2022, regardless of the outcome against the Seahawks, will be the first season since the Rams hired McVay as head coach in 2017 that the franchise has finished with a negative record.
With or without Sean McVay: Los Angeles Rams face difficult offseason
The defending Super Bowl champions have been plagued by injuries throughout the season. The coach has also been hit hard, according to the report. McVay now needs time to recharge his batteries and determine if he can muster the energy to continue coaching next season.
The Rams, meanwhile, have some delicate offseason decisions to make with or without McVay. For instance, the franchise is without its own first-round pick in the upcoming draft.
In addition, the team is just under the salary cap for the upcoming season, so big personnel changes will be difficult to implement. Add to that the fact that offensive coordinator Liam Coen will return to his old job in the same capacity at Kentucky College, which he last held in 2021.
And McVay, too, could now seek his long-term fortune outside the NFL.
Sean McVay: Future as a television pundit?
So McVay is expected to have several options on the table for his future at once: He could attract interest from broadcasters – as he did last season in the form of streaming service Amazon – but many of those jobs have already been filled for next season.
McVay at least made it clear before the final game of the season that the networks’ interest in him stems in part from the fact that he “didn’t run away from the decision to declare that this is something I’m interested in.”
In Los Angeles, McVay signed a contract extension just before the season through the 2026 season that is expected to pay him $14 million per season, according to “Sportico.”
However, should McVay resign, he would remain under contract with Los Angeles, just as Sean Payton is with the New Orleans Saints, whom the franchise must release for talks with other teams.
Amazon has also offered him a five-year, $100 million contract as a TV analyst after winning the title with the Rams, according to the “New York Post. “
