The San Francisco 49ers want to extend the contract of receiver Brandon Aiyuk. But it won’t be an easy undertaking, especially financially
John Lynch, general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, dismissed rumors of a Brandon Aiyuk transfer last week and made it clear that the franchise is “actively” talking to the wide receiver to negotiate a long-term contract.
Now Aiyuk himself has spoken out and shared his opinion on the “Nightcap” podcast. “I’m trying to get what I deserve,” the 26-year-old explained.
“I feel like this football season I found out who I am as a person and as a player, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization. Just the value that I have when I walk into the building,” Aiyuk continued.
He continued, “People will follow me because I’ve done it the right way since I’ve been in this building. From the first day I walked in until today. I’ve done it the right way. “
So the pass catcher is hoping that “professionals on both sides” will come to a “professional agreement” and that he himself can continue to play professional football.
He did not go into detail about what he thinks Aiyuk “deserves” – even after the podcast host threw 30 to 32 million US dollars into the room
Financial leeway at 49ers low
The receiver was selected 25th overall in the 2020 draft and is entering the fifth and final year of his contract, which is worth 14.124 million US dollars in 2024 thanks to the fifth-year option.
The wideout has continued to improve over the years, rushing for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season.
The problem for the Niners: With several expensive athletes already on the roster – and a mega-contract not too far off for quarterback Brock Purdy – it will take a financial feat to pay Aiyuk.
