Brock Purdy is expected to sign a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the coming weeks. The quarterback wants to get the matter over with quickly.
So far, Brock Purdy has been a real bargain for the San Francisco 49ers. Because the quarterback was drafted as “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 2022 NFL Draft, his base salary this season was just $985,000.
For the Niners, this was an extremely comfortable situation, as the 25-year-old’s contract placed little strain on the Californians’ salary cap. Instead, the financial resources could be put into the squad in other ways. This was one reason why San Francisco made it to the Super Bowl last year.
But this phase is now coming to an end. Before Purdy enters the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, he naturally wants to have a new contract in place. And this could be a big one.
After all, the bar for quarterback contracts has been raised again and again recently. The current top earner in the NFL is Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, who gets an average of $60 million a year.
Purdy himself doesn’t yet know exactly what to expect in the upcoming negotiations. But he says he’s not interested in an eternal farce.
Purdy makes it clear: “I’m not a drama guy”
“It’s the first time I’ve been through all this. I don’t know what the next step is. But we’ll see. I’d obviously rather have it done sooner than later so I can get back to work here with all the guys,” he said on Monday at the last press conference before the vacation.
Purdy firmly believes that he can lead the 49ers to success. “I don’t know exactly what it will all look like and what it will mean. But I do know that I am the right man for this organization and that I can do everything to lead us where we want to go,” he clarified.
But how difficult will the negotiations actually be? It is considered unlikely that he will exceed Prescott’s average salary, but he is likely to come close. In the end, there is likely to be a salary increase of more than 50 times or 5,000 percent.
But Purdy wants to avoid a poker for the last dollar. “For me, at the end of the day, it’s about winning. I want to win for the organization and everyone around it,” he said.
And further: “I’m not the kind of guy who wants any drama. I’m here for my teammates, for the organization and for the locker room. And I want to handle this very professionally.”
