San Francisco 49ers: Brock Purdy praises Trey Lance and gives injury update

Brock Purdy comments on his healing process after his serious elbow injury, reveals a curious training method and ennobles, of all people, competitor Trey Lance for his support over the course of last season.

Brock Purdy gave an update on his serious elbow injury and his recovery process on the Kelce brothers’ “New Heights” podcast. It’s reportedly going very positively, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback revealed.

“I’m taking it one day at a time and doing the rehab. I can train and already do everything with my body. It’s just my arm that needs to be fixed. Everything is going well,” Purdy said.

In addition, the 23-year-old talked about a curious training method and revealed that he has learned to throw with his left arm in recent months. “I have to be ready for anything now,” he joked.

Asked which teammates have been most important to him in his outstanding rookie season, he replied, “Definitely Trey Lance. He’s been out the whole season and still been there every meet helping.” Purdy also mentioned Jimmy Garoppolo – who was recently traded to the Las Vegas Raiders – and George Kittle as big supports for him.

Purdy entered the season as “Mister Irrelevant” (last pick in the 2022 draft) and the 49ers’ third-string quarterback, taking over as starter after serious injuries to Lance in Week 2 and Garoppolo in Week 13. Thanks in part to his stellar performance, the 49ers made it all the way to the NFC CHampionship Game, where Purdy then tore a collateral ligament in his elbow and San Francisco crashed and burned without him, going 7-31.

Shortly after the injury, horror scenarios circulated around San Francisco that Purdy could be out for up to a year due to the complicated injury. In early April, however, there was the first small all-clear after surgery: “The plan is to start throwing in three months, but until then it all depends on how the therapy goes and what the range of motion looks like,” Purdy said, expressing optimism.

Whether Purdy will be fit in time for the start of the season, however, remains an open question despite rehab going according to plan. Until then, Lance and Sam Darnold are fighting for the starting job in preparation. Lately, trade rumors have also been piling up for Lance.
