Saints in black: New Orleans unveils new helmet design

The New Orleans Saints will wear a black helmet in at least one game during the 2022 NFL season. Pass rusher Cameron Jordan is excited, but has a suggestion.

Munich – The NFL’s new helmet rule allows teams to bring back some classic throwback looks. The New Orleans Saints opted for a different twist and created a new design.

The franchise released images Thursday of a black helmet that will be worn for at least one game in 2022. In this team’s long history, the Saints have only played with a black helmet once – and that was in the 1969 preseason.

The Saints plan to combine with the black helmet and popular white jerseys. Pass rusher Cameron Jordan would have liked to play in all black, but is fine with that option: “I was hoping we would wear black with black, but that’s cool too. I like the idea of us having a black helmet.”

Until now, it was forbidden in the NFL to wear several different helmets in one season for safety reasons. This has now been changed. However, the league mandates that alternate helmets must be the same make, model and size. In addition, the helmets must be worn in practice for at least one week before the game. Other teams apparently also use this option.

“I think this is an idea that has been in development for some time. And it’s a league initiative,” Saints head coach Dennis Allen said. “I don’t really go into depth and deal with it. But I thought it would look kind of cool, so I said, ‘All right, let’s do it.'”

Many franchises also have the option of going back to old jerseys, though whether they do so is unknown at this time.
