Rodgers clarifies after Packers exit: “I don’t want to be part of a rebuild”

Aaron Rodgers wants to take his time with the decision about his future. But with one sentence, the Green Bay Packers superstar gives a deep insight.

Munich – Aaron Rodgers is not at a loss for clear statements. This became clear before the season when he read the riot act to the front office and publicly threatened to leave or end his career. The same was true after the farce about his alleged vaccination against Covid-19, when he repeatedly spouted confused phrases about the coronavirus for weeks following his positive test.

Even in the moment of greatest disappointment this season, directly after the play-off exit after the 10:13 against the San Francisco 49ers, the “Gunslinger” did not beat around the bush.

While he wants to let the shock of the loss sink in, one thing is for sure: “I don’t want to be part of a rebuild if I continue to play. “

Packers probably $44.8 million over salary cap

But the Packers are unlikely to avoid a rebuild. Unless, that is, the big names collectively decide to forgo some of the salary in order to make another collective attempt to pin the second Super Bowl ring on Rodgers after all.

According to “ESPN” reporter Adam Schefter, the franchise would overspend the salary cap of 208.2 million US dollars by a whopping 44.8 million US dollars. And that’s with a possible new contract for Davante Adams still to be negotiated.

Rodgers point to expiring contracts

Before the sensational move, Rodgers also stressed, “There are so many decisions that have to be made. Key players, a lot of guys who played today … so many guys whose contracts are expiring or about to expire and all this salary cap stuff.”

Despite another MVP-worthy season, the 38-year-old also knows he doesn’t have too many years left to make the longed-for dream of another Super Bowl appearance come true. That’s why he doesn’t want to waste any time, which would almost inevitably be the case in a shake-up.

When he left the field, the Packers legend looked years older. But that was surely only due to the disappointment.
