Quarterback Jalen Hurst has to almost completely relearn the Philadelphia Eagles’ system of play. The reason for this is new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore
Kellen Moore has been considered one of the most capable offensive coordinators in the NFL for years. From 2019 to 2022, he was responsible for the Dallas Cowboys’ successful offense. After a less successful season with the Los Angeles Chargers, the 35-year-old was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Although the Eagles were still in the Super Bowl in February 2022 and also made the playoffs last season, Moore is not afraid to completely change Philadelphia’s offensive system. Quarterback Jalen Hurts therefore has to learn almost everything from scratch.
“This whole offseason has been about learning,” Hurts said. “You get to a point where you’re comfortable with it. But we’ll also get to the point where we have to repeat, repeat and repeat again. Right now there’s a lot of new components – the majority of it, probably 95 percent, is new.”
Hurts tries to look at this positively: “It’s been a fun process because you can see how it works. Because of the number of coaches I’ve had in my time, I’ve picked up a lot of new knowledge and new understanding. “
The passer admits that he is still at the very beginning of this process. But: “I think I’ve had a great offseason here, just learning. When I come back and training camp starts, I’ll be ready to go. “
Hurts can take on more responsibility
Nick Sirianni , the head coach in Philly, on the other hand, downplayed the changes a bit. “There are new concepts. There are new ways to think about a play. But it’s within the concepts from the past. He (Hurts) can now take on more responsibility within a play. So that’s new for him. Even though we might play a similar play, the execution might be different than last season.”
Hurts, who has been playing in the NFL since 2020, is therefore approaching the season “as if I’m new, as if I’m a rookie and therefore have to be diligent and patient.”
He trusts the positive influences of the new coaches: “Kellen (Moore) and (quarterbacks) coach Doug (Nussmeier) came in here and were very structured and organized. I think and hope that will make a big difference for us. “
