NFL: Will the Dallas Cowboys get a new quarterback in the draft?

Although the Dallas Cowboys are well positioned at the quarterback position with Dak Prescott, the Texans could already be looking for a successor to the 30-year-old in the upcoming draft.

Adam Schefter from “ESPN” definitely sees a need for the Cowboys at the quarterback position and therefore calls them a “sleeper” in the upcoming draft. And that has to do with the contract situation of Dak Prescott, who is entering the final year of his contract and is earning around 30 million dollars.

Dallas has restructured the 30-year-old’s contract several times and still has until March 12, 2025 to make him a new offer. Otherwise, he will count against the team’s cap hit at 40 million dollars – while also being considered a free agent.

Even with an extension, Prescott will be expensive and eat up at least 25 million dollars of next year’s salary cap. That’s not counting his regular salary plus any bonuses. And that could make it really expensive.

The 30-year-old and his advisor want to sweeten their deal with the Texans for around 60 million a year. Prescott, who is playing well but not outstandingly, is probably making a very excessive demand. So Dallas will have to start looking for a successor

And that’s where the draft comes in, according to Adam Schefter. He says, “What do the Cowboys do if they lose Dak? The thought is interesting and the reason why I think Dallas is a sleeper in the quarterback market in the draft. “

Cowboys could pick a QB sooner than thought

At the same time, he elaborated on his thoughts on “NFL Live” last Tuesday: “At some point, they’re going to have to draft a quarterback. At an earlier position than you might think right now. Dak is going into his last year of his contract and it might be time to bring in a young player to prepare him for the future.”

The Cowboys are in a difficult situation. Take the risk of losing Prescott? Pay him a lot of money? Or take the risk of not fully realizing the potential of the talented core of Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs with a young quarterback? Either way, a lot of work awaits the Cowboys’ front office in the coming weeks.
