NFL: Washington Commanders may have tried to persuade Andrew Luck to make a comeback

Before this past season, the Washington Commanders may have tried to bring an absolute top star back out of retirement.

The Washington Commanders may have tried to bring Andrew Luck out of retirement before last season, according to “ESPN.”

The team was so concerned about its own quarterback situation that it began looking around the NFL for alternatives, the network reports.

In their search for upgrades, the Commies are said to have inquired about the 33-year-old Luck.

Luck declined the request, however, and the team traded for Carson Wentz of the Indianapolis Colts instead.

Injuries end Luck’s career

Luck had announced his retirement a few weeks before the 2019 season after suffering recurring serious injuries (including a kidney tear and concussion) in previous years.

He had been drafted No. 1 overall by the Colts in 2012, replacing Peyton Manning after his neck injury, who was released and moved to the Denver Broncos.

Luck had his best year in the 2014/15 season with the Colts making it to the AFC Championship Game.

There, however, Indianapolis failed to beat the New England Patriots led by Tom Brady.

Colts draft Richardson – Commanders back Howell

2017 Luck missed all of the season after his shoulder failed to heal quickly enough following surgery.

However, the quarterback came back so strong the following season that he was named the best comeback player of the year.

Since his retirement, no playmaker has been able to make a lasting impact with the Colts. In this year’s draft, Indy selected Anthony Richardson at position four, a promising talent for the position.

The Commanders enter the 2023 season with young Sam Howell as their starter and also have an experienced replacement on the roster in Jacoby Brissett.
