NFL – Washington Commanders: Gabe Taylor wants to follow in the footsteps of his late brother Sean

Sean Taylor was once on his way to becoming a top safety for the Washington Redskins before his life was cut short. Almost 20 years later, his brother Gabe Taylor wants to carry on the legacy.

Sean Taylor had a great NFL career ahead of him. In 2004, he was drafted fifth overall by the then Washington Redskins and went on to become one of the best safeties in the league.

But in 2007, his life ended tragically when burglars shot him in his home. Taylor was only 24 years old. Eighteen years later, Sean’s younger brother Gabriel Taylor wants to continue his unfinished legacy.

Taylor was invited to rookie minicamp by his brother’s old team, now known as the Commanders. It was a decision that caused a lot of emotion in the family.

“It means everything. My father said, ‘I want you to be a Commander. I want you to be a Commander so badly.’ I really wanted to come here,” he said on the sidelines of the camp. “After the draft, I prayed, and I think I made the right decision.”

Sean Taylor still present in Washington today

Like his brother Sean, Gabe also plays safety. The number 21 that Sean Taylor wore during his playing days is still prominently displayed at the Commanders’ facilities today.

“When you see 21 on the wall and then my brother’s name, it shows me that I have to do something to represent him,” said Gabe Taylor.

When asked what he would say to his brother if he could, he replied, ‘I know you’re damn proud of me.’
