After Brandon Aiyuk, the San Francisco 49ers are facing the next contract drama. This time, left tackle Trent Williams is threatening to cause trouble

Because Williams, like receiver Aiyuk before him, is unhappy with his contract and has no problem voicing his displeasure. But what is the current situation between the 49ers and their star tackle?

If “ESPN” is to be believed, the team from California is in danger of a super disaster: “The 49ers still have some work to do. I’ve been told Trent Williams is not happy, and the threat of him missing games is real,” said reporter Jeremy Fowler.

He has no doubt that Williams is unhappy: “It’s often a negotiating ploy. I don’t have the impression that it is at the moment. He has already earned 150 million dollars in his career. He has no more guaranteed money in his contract. He’s currently the fourth-highest paid left tackle, even though he’s been the best the last couple years. […] So he’s making them wait even longer.”

The 49ers face a hungry, talented Jets defense in a week. It should be in their best interest to have Williams back on the team in the season opener.

William and Purdy as a dream duo

Especially when you consider the importance of Trent Williams to the 49ers offense. His influence on the run and passing game is enormous – but the tackle is particularly important in combination with quarterback Brock Purdy.

This was recently revealed in a report by “ESPN”. In 1435 snaps that Williams and Purdy played together, the 49ers averaged an impressive 0.18 Expected Points Added (EPA) per play – meaning the probability of scoring points in the corresponding drive increased significantly.

Without his tackle, the EPA value for Brock Purdy drops to 0.00, making for an average offense.
