The Seattle Seahawks have overhauled their quarterback room in the offseason so far. But that doesn’t mean they’re done thinking about it.
It has been a stressful NFL offseason so far for the Seattle Seahawks and their general manager John Schneider. The Washington team has left no stone unturned, especially at the quarterback position.
Longtime starter Geno Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders after failing to agree on a contract extension. Free agent Sam Darnold was signed as his replacement.
In addition, Drew Lock returned to the Seahawks after a stint with the New York Giants, and Sam Howell and Jaren Hall are two more quarterbacks under contract in Seattle.
With four playmakers on the roster, one might think that this position will not play a role in the upcoming draft. But Schneider sees it differently; he is deliberately not ruling out the signing of another quarterback.
“I think it’s a great situation,” Schneider told Seattle Sports 710. ‘We have four guys we really like. That doesn’t rule out us doing something in the draft to see what’s out there,’ he added.
Howell’s future uncertain – question marks surrounding Darnold
Lock in particular had other options. “So we thought we’d better finish this up, kind of loop him in, bring him in, and then see what happens in the draft, because it’s hard to find the perfect quarterback when you’re going through the process,” the GM explained.
There have also been trade rumors surrounding Howell recently. According to ESPN, the Seahawks are willing to part with the former Washington Commanders player and have already received inquiries.
The quarterback rebuild is clearly not yet complete. Especially since there are question marks surrounding Darnold, who had the best season of his career with the Minnesota Vikings but collapsed in the playoffs.
It couldn’t hurt to have a young, talented player on the team who others may have overlooked in the draft.
