NFL: San Francisco 49ers scouting market for running backs

As part of training camp, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to strengthen their running back position.

Superstar Christian McCaffrey is causing a stir at the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp after recovering from injury. The 29-year-old could get another teammate at his position in the coming days.

The 49ers appear to be looking for reinforcements. Jeff Wilson and D’Ernest Johnson have already been given a tryout in training.

Wilson is an old acquaintance. The 29-year-old already played for the 49ers from 2018 to 2022. In his career, he has racked up 2,370 rushing yards, 585 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns.

49ers: Squad depth a problem?

Johnson has previously played for the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars. The former undrafted free agent made a name for himself in a handful of games in 2021, but mostly served as a backup.

In six years, he racked up 989 rushing yards, 465 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. In addition to “CMC,” the 49ers’ roster currently includes Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, Patrick Taylor, and Corey Kiner.

Apart from Guerendo, the roster depth has little NFL experience to speak of. Another veteran could give the 49ers more security, especially in the event of another McCaffrey injury.
