After Brandon Aiyuk, the second player at the San Francisco 49ers is making a stink – he is also demanding more money. The Californians have now responded
In recent weeks, the demand for a pay rise from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has dominated the headlines at the San Francisco 49ers.
As reported by “The Athletic”, left tackle Trent Williams also failed to show up for practice on Wednesday for “contract-related reasons”.
The 49ers responded to the holdout by placing the offensive tackle on the Reserve/Did Not Report list. That means Williams is not currently on the active roster and the 49ers can use his vacant roster spot to sign another player – in this case, wide receiver Malik Turner.
As the key man on the offensive line in front of quarterback Brock Purdy, 11-time Pro Bowler Williams has some leverage to put pressure on the 49ers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is confident that the 144-pound colossus will be back at practice soon: “I was hoping he would be here, but I knew it could be a possibility. I’m pretty confident it’s going to work out in the long run,” Shanahan said on the sidelines of 49ers training camp.
Trent Williams: Severe penalty per missed practice
Williams will receive 23 million dollars per year in his contract signed in 2021. The contract is actually valid until at least 2026.
However, the future Hall of Famer presumably wants to earn a similar amount to Lions tackle Penei Sewell, who has been the NFL’s highest-paid player at his position since April with 28 million a year.
According to “The Athletic”, Williams will be fined 50,000 dollars for every practice he misses.
