NFL – San Francisco 49ers: Heavy fines for striking Brandon Aiyuk?

Brandon Aiyuk is still on holdout. But the star receiver is now facing hefty fines.

Brandon Aiyuk has been on strike with the San Francisco 49ers since the start of training camp, and the 26-year-old’s holdout is still in effect a week before the start of the season.

But that could soon prove costly for Aiyuk: The Niners can now impose fines of up to 45,769 dollars for each missed practice day, reports “ESPN”.

Aiyuk had previously cited a back and neck injury as the reason for the missed practices. However, the 49ers’ team doctors have now declared the wide receiver healthy, making his absence unexcused.

Under the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, franchises can impose a fine of $16,009 for each missed practice session – but a maximum of $45,769 per day if a player misses multiple sessions.

49ers GM John Lynch had actually hoped that Aiyuk would return to practice as a result: “I know he’s here today and the expectation is that he’ll be back in practice,” Lynch explained at a press conference.

However, as “ESPN” reports, the wide receiver was not present at Wednesday’s training sessions, which were open to the media.

Whether the 49ers will now take action is still unclear. Head coach Kyle Shanahan left open the question of whether the team would penalize the receiver for the practice absence: “I’ll deal with it when it happens.”
