Russell Wilson will play for the Denver Broncos next season. The Seattle Seahawks traded their quarterback to Colorado. But the Washington Commanders reportedly also wanted the playmaker – and were willing to dig deep into their pockets.
Munich/Washington – Last season, the quarterback of the Washington Commanders was Taylor Heinicke.
Heinicke did a solid job, however, it’s an open secret that the District of Columbia franchise is looking for a new playmaker.
Mega offer to Seahawks for Wilson?
According to multiple sources, including reliable NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Commanders were desperate to sign Russell Wilson. Head coach Ron Rivera’s team prepared a mega offer for him.
As “NBC” has learned, the front office of the Capitals is said to have offered “high picks in the next three drafts”, plus players.
Although the Commanders made the better offer than the Broncos, the Seahawks decided against it. According to Sports Illustrated, Seattle didn’t want Wilson to stay in the NFC.
Thanks to No Trade Clause: Last word on Wilson
However, even if the Seahawks, ironically located in Washington State, had agreed to a trade to the US capital, the deal probably would not have gone through.
The reason is a special contract clause that most top quarterbacks have in their contract: a so-called “no trade clause”. This means that the player cannot simply be shipped from A to B by his team, as is the case with 99 percent of NFL players.
Only way out for a trade: The player would have to sign the release of that clause. That’s exactly what happened with Wilson on Tuesday night, along with his medical.
So who will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders in the 2022 season is still completely up in the air.
The only thing that is certain is that, despite the efforts, it won’t be Russell Wilson.
