The New York Giants and quarterback Russell Wilson have agreed on a one-year deal. The signing could be a last chance – for Wilson and for the current faces of the Giants.
“I’ve been here before and can’t wait to do it again,” Russell Wilson announced his upcoming move to the New York Giants on social media.
He posted a picture of MetLife Stadium, the home of the two New York franchises.
The quarterback is surely alluding to his victory in Super Bowl 48 (2013). An achievement he would like to repeat with the Giants.
The 36-year-old and New York have agreed on a one-year deal. He can earn up to 21 million US dollars, only half of which is guaranteed.
This also makes the quarterback’s expectations clear: play well and you’ll earn well.
Wilson is the second veteran quarterback to join the Giants this offseason after Jameis Winston. In view of the contract situation, Wilson is likely to be the starter.
The fact that New York is active in the quarterback market in free agency is certainly also related to the quality at the position in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Giants do own the third pick, but quarterback talent with top potential is scarce in this draft class. With the approach they have chosen, the Giants at least ensure that they are not forced to find it in the draft.
Giants: “Let Russ cook?”
From a purely sporting point of view, Wilson should at least offer more than his most recent predecessors. Daniel Jones, Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito were unable to make lasting use of their chances.
But Wilson’s heyday was also a few years ago. Towards the end of his time with the Seahawks, he was supposed to be given more opportunities within the offense under the “Let Russ cook” campaign.
However, this only worked for a short time, while Wilson burned out more and more over the seasons. After stops with the Broncos and Steelers, he is now going to New York. Similar to his last team, the Giants are likely to plan for him to be a solid administrator.
Wilson and the Giants’ bet
However, how the “Wilson experiment” goes in the coming season is of great importance to both sides. If Wilson cooks with the offense, the appealing performance should extend his starting time.
However, another harmless season could finally put an end to his time in the kitchen.
A lot also depends on the signing for the Giants’ management. Both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have been criticized for some time, and the Giants have been floundering in the bottom of the table for quite some time.
The credit that the duo had built up through their early playoff successes is likely to run out after this season at the latest.
The Wilson situation could turn out to be a lucky break for both sides. A reinvigorated Wilson would extend his own career and boost his bosses’ job security.
However, it also seems possible that the ten-time Pro Bowler will remain no more than a broken promise from the past in the Giants’ future.
