Chicago pulls off its seventh comeback after trailing in the final two minutes. At one point, the Green Bay Packers looked like sure winners.
Chicago’s comeback kings have struck again. With 103 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Caleb Williams led his Bears to a victory against their big rivals, the Green Bay Packers, that no one thought possible.
Head coach Ben Johnson’s team won 31-27 (3-7, 0-14, 3:0, 25:6) and advanced to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. It was only the second playoff victory for the Bears against the Packers, the first coming in 1941.
Packers’ missed shot heralds comeback
Williams’ pass to DJ Moore with 103 seconds left in the game gave the Bears a 15-point comeback. The last time the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady, had made up such a deficit in the playoffs was in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Bears missed numerous chances in the first two quarters, failing to convert fourth downs. Green Bay, especially quarterback Jordan Love, knew how to take advantage of this, needing only 9 passes in the first half to score 3 touchdowns.
But the Packers also made a mistake, or rather a missed shot, that cost them dearly. Brandon McManus missed his 55-yard field goal attempt as the clock ran out, leaving the score at 21-3 at halftime.
Three Bears touchdowns in the final quarter
The picture was different after the break, at least: the Bears allowed almost nothing defensively. Green Bay’s offense had to leave the field three times in the first four drives with three and out.
However, it took until the final quarter for the Bears to score their first touchdown. When Matthew Goldon caught Jordan Love’s fourth touchdown pass, the pendulum seemed to swing back in favor of the Packers, but another missed field goal by McManus and the previous touchdown by Olamide Zaccheus, including a two-point conversion, gave the Bears an extra boost.
The Bears now await either the Philadelphia Eagles or Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field in the divisional round. If Philly prevails against the San Francisco 49ers, the opponent will be Philadelphia; if the 49ers win, Chicago will face San Francisco again.
