U-turn by the Philadelphia Eagles: After internal discussions within the team, the Super Bowl winners now want to accept an invitation from the White House after all.
The Philadelphia Eagles are doing a U-turn and now want to visit the White House and meet with US President Donald Trump after their Super Bowl victory at the beginning of February.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, there have been discussions within the franchise. The result: they would now be happy to receive an invitation from Washington.
Earlier, the magazine “U.S. Sun” reported that the Eagles had finally decided not to attend. There were already rumors that the Eagles would not go to the White House in the context of the Super Bowl, which Philadelphia won 40-22 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“An anonymous source close to the franchise emphasized that there were already talks about not visiting President Trump after the triumph against the Chiefs,” the report said.
According to the report, talks were held between several players and Eagles officials at the time, resulting in a ‘clear no’.
“We are focusing on the game right now, but if we win the Super Bowl, we would not go to the White House,” said a member of the owners’ group ahead of Super Bowl LIX.
Philadelphia Eagles already declined visit to Donald Trump in 2018
An Eagles star told the “U.S. Sun”: “We represent a city and a state that stands for equality, respect and values that respect every human being. We will not forget what happened and the criticism we have received for standing against racism. And we will not stray from our values of respect, integrity and equality.”
It wouldn’t have been the first time that the Eagles, as reigning champions, have opted out of the traditional White House reception.
Eagles already opted out of visiting the White House in 2018
“A large group of Eagles players had decided not to attend. Only five or fewer players had agreed to attend the White House ceremony,” they told ESPN at the time.
Trump regretted the cancellation in 2018, tweeting at the time: “The Philadelphia Eagles football team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come and we canceled the event. Staying in the locker room during our national anthem is just as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!”
