The “Tush Push” is a trademark of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the Green Bay Packers apparently want to put an end to this special play.
The Philadelphia Eagles are not only the reigning Super Bowl champions, but have also created a play in recent years that is associated with the team like no other. We are talking about the “Tush Push”.
It is a special form of quarterback sneak. In this particular case, however, the quarterback is pushed forward from behind by some teammates, usually a tight end and running back, while the offensive line tries to push the opposing defensive line away.
The play is not particularly attractive, but it is highly effective. The Eagles almost always manage to get the necessary inches or even yards. This is partly due to the extremely strong O-line and partly to the athleticism of quarterback Jalen Hurts. Now, however, there are apparently serious efforts to have the “tush push” banned.
As NFL Vice President Troy Vincent explained, an unnamed team officially submitted a request to ban the play. This is a significant difference from last year, for example, when there were already considerations to ban the “Tush Push”, but no team had submitted a corresponding proposal.
Packers president rejects “Tush Push”
According to “The Athletic”, the team in question is the Green Bay Packers. Their president Mark Murphy had already declared after the defeat in the Wild Card Round against the Eagles a few weeks ago that he rejected the “Tush Push”. The play was used again and again in this game as well.
“I’m not a fan of this play. It has nothing to do with skill and basically means an automatic first down on plays of a yard or less,” he said on the Packers’ team website. He said it was ‘bad for the game and we should ban the push of the ball carrier again. There used to be a rule like that, but it’s not enforced anymore,’ he said.
However, it is also true that numerous teams have already tried to imitate the “tush push”, but failed. This included the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
It remains to be seen whether the ban will actually be implemented. In the NFL, rule changes require a three-quarters majority of the teams to be adopted.
