NFL: New York Giants squander number one pick – Lock shows sportsmanship

They can still win after all. But why now of all times? The Giants have probably squandered the first draft pick.

“The fans deserve it, the locker room deserves it, everyone who is part of this organization deserves it. We knew what we were capable of,” said Drew Lock after the win against the Indianapolis Colts.

The New York Giants quarterback’s mega-performance against the Colts had a huge impact.

On the one hand, the Giants’ success ensured that “Indy” was finally eliminated from the race for the NFL playoffs. On the other hand, despite the victory, Lock himself probably became the biggest enemy in New York.

Finally, the Giants slipped to fourth in the draft order as a result of the victory. This means that, as things stand, they are no longer in the running for the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Instead, the New England Patriots are now “in charge” of choosing the first team in the draft or trading the most valuable pick. The Patriots would be guaranteed the number one pick with a loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Giants: Lock delivers five touchdowns

But not only that: in addition to the Pats, the Tennessee Titans have also moved past the Giants. In contrast to New England, which probably already has the future franchise quarterback in Drake Maye in its squad, the Titans are looking for a new playmaker. Because Tennessee (as things stand now) is picking in second place, they could snatch the better quarterback away from the Giants.

From the Giants’ point of view, this is a disaster. It was only during the course of the current season that Daniel Jones was released, who, despite a mega-contract, never delivered as hoped. Lock and backup Tommy DeVito probably don’t have what it takes to be starting quarterback for an extended period of time.

New York needs a quarterback. This makes it all the more questionable why head coach Brian Daboll kept Lock on the field for so long. The playmaker had already scored three touchdowns by halftime and ended up with four passing touchdowns, 309 passing yards and a rushing touchdown.

From the 28-year-old’s perspective, it’s also understandable why he wanted to win the game so badly. He’s playing for his job. He wanted to show the Giants brass that they can count on him and plan with him in 2025.

However, this did not go down so well with most fans. “Drew, you had a job today,” wrote a user on the “X” platform. Another said, “He’s doing everything he can to keep Shadeur Sanders from New York.” Sanders is the son of NFL icon Deion Sanders and a quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes. He is considered a potential number one pick.

The Giants, Lock and Coach Daboll must at least be given credit for demonstrating true sportsmanship and not intentionally losing in order to gain an advantage in the draft. It will be interesting to see which teams will stock up in the last week of the season and which will not.
