The New York Giants only signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a big contract last offseason. Nevertheless, a college playmaker could find his way to the East Coast in the upcoming draft
The New York Giants dug deep into their pockets in March 2023 to sign quarterback Daniel Jones to a long-term deal.
The quarterback signed a four-year contract worth up to 160 million US dollars, but the franchise was subsequently criticized for the move. This is because the playmaker did not impress in the years before, even though he led the team to a win in the Wildcard Round in the playoffs of the 2022 season.
Now Jones, who missed large parts of last season due to injury, could have a new competitor at his side. As several US media outlets have reported, Giants owner John Mara has given his general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll permission to select a quarterback early in the upcoming draft.
“If they fall in love with a quarterback and think he’s worthy of being picked 6th or trading up for him, I would certainly support that,” Mara is quoted as saying by “ESPN”.
This year’s class is considered tremendously talented. To get one of the top prospects – Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy and Drake Maye – an uptrade might actually still be necessary. The Giants have apparently realized this as well, having done their homework and already taken a closer look at several playmakers.
NFL Draft 2024: Will the New York Giants take a quarterback in round one?
“They went to some of the Pro Days, we had some of those guys there. I don’t think they’re close to making a final decision on which way we’re going yet. The discussions will take place over the next few weeks,” Mara continues.
Even in the event that the “G-Men” have a rookie in their ranks alongside Jones in 2024, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the former: “Why not have them both compete against each other? Let them compete against each other and may the better one win.”
However, Mara wants to stay out of the final decision – at least as far as sporting aspects are concerned: “I’ll let the general manager and the head coach put together the squad. We’ve been working the same way here for many years. If they are convinced of a player, I won’t interfere.” If he has any doubts about the player’s character, however, he will intervene.
