Former basketball superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson is apparently bidding for the Washington Commanders as part of an investor group. If the bid is successful, he would be one of the NFL’s few black minority owners
Earvin “Magic” Johnson may be getting into the poker for the Washington Commanders.
The former NBA superstar has joined the bidding group led by Josh Harris, who already co-owns the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, according to consistent reports.
It is not yet known how much money the 63-year-old will contribute. The fortune of the former point guard, who was most recently successful as an entrepreneur and investor, is estimated at over 600 million dollars.
Johnson has frequently invested in sports teams
Johnson already owns part of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, he also invested in eSports teams and the Los Angeles Sparks women’s basketball team. Alongside Harris, he also bid for the Denver Broncos when they were up for sale last year.
The group led by Johnson and Harris is said to be one of the few still in talks with current Commanders owner Dan Snyder. Snyder is highly controversial due to numerous allegations and investigations into financial improprieties and a toxic work environment, and is therefore looking to sell the franchise.
Lately, negotiations had stagnated, but now it seems as if a sale of the team from the American capital could go through before the NFL owners’ meeting later this month in Arizona.
Should Johnson’s group win the bid, the former basketball player would become one of a slim handful of black minority owners in the NFL.
