In an interview with US reporters, Rams coach Sean McVay comments on the Stafford situation and explains who he would like as backup QB.
At the beginning of the NFL offseason, numerous rumors were circulating about Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders were said to be interested – and apparently they weren’t the only ones.
However, the playmaker is not going to another team after all. He has agreed to a contract revision with the Los Angeles franchise and will stay for at least another year.
According to head coach Sean McVay, the signal caller’s departure was always a long way off anyway. “It was never something that felt like we were getting close to – and it was never something I even allowed myself to think about in my head,” the head coach told U.S. reporters.
McVay also explained that he expects the same process to be repeated with Stafford next year and after each additional season he wants to play.
“We’ve always had a good dialogue, and I think it’s a year-to-year thing. He’s obviously under contract with us for two more years, but as long as he wants to play, we feel good about it.”
Since the topic of Stafford at the Rams was put on hold, McVay’s mood has brightened considerably. He admitted that he has been sleeping much better in the past few days.
McVay hopes for Garoppolo at the Rams
According to McVay, keeping the 37-year-old was always option A. “Obviously, that was always the end goal. I think ultimately it comes down to the partnership and how important it is for him to lead the way. I couldn’t be more grateful, I’m really excited about it,” said the coach.
Incidentally, McVay also commented on the subject of backup quarterbacks and explained that the Rams are interested in having Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster again. “We would love to get him back,” said the head coach, who also admitted that he had been more concerned with the Stafford issue recently.
“There will probably be one or two interested parties for Jimmy – and he has the right to get that kind of interest. But yes, if you’re asking me if I want to bring Jimmy back here, the answer is absolutely yes.”
Garoppolo signed a one-year contract with the Rams in March 2024.
