Matthew Stafford still has two years left on his contract with the Rams. However, Los Angeles could part ways with him before the season.
After the Los Angeles Rams’ playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Matthew Stafford had left his future in the NFL open. However, it is now clear that the 37-year-old wants to continue playing in the upcoming season. But will he continue to do so with the Los Angeles Rams?
The quarterback still has two years left on his contract with the Rams. Immediately after the playoff exit, head coach Sean McVay did not want to speculate about Stafford’s future: “I’m not really interested in talking about anything that relates to next year,” he clarified.
About a month later, McVay and the Rams’ front office will have given more thought to the upcoming season. While wide receiver Cooper Kupp is already on the cut list, a final decision on Matt Stafford has apparently not yet been made.
There is no doubt about Stafford’s abilities. Against the Eagles, he completed 26 of 44 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns – without an interception. Stafford has thrown 15 touchdown passes in playoff games for the Rams. That ties him with Kurt Warner for the most postseason touchdown passes in franchise history.
According to ESPN, the Rams’ position is quite clear: In principle, L.A. wants to keep the quarterback in 2025 – but not under his current contract. That’s because his cap hit would be around $50 million next season, the fifth-highest figure in the NFL.
Discussions about a restructuring have apparently been ongoing for some time, but recently apparently without noticeable progress, as “The Athletic” reports. If the franchise and the quarterback cannot reach an agreement, the Rams have only two options: trade Stafford or release him.
Matt Stafford is still in top form
Whether the Rams continue to rely on the 37-year-old or whether another team will strike will become clear in the coming months.
Stafford himself has no doubts about his ability: “I feel like I played a pretty good game,” he said after the game against the Eagles. When asked if he still has this sport in him, he replied, “It definitely feels that way.”
Star receiver Puka Nacua also praised the passer after the playoff exit: “Everyone in this locker room completely believes in Stafford. It’s a great feeling to go out there and know that your quarterback can make big plays anytime he’s called upon. We have a lot of faith in the number 9.”
Stafford has played for the Rams since the 2021 season and won the Super Bowl in his first season. In 2024, he recorded 3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions during the regular season.
