The collaboration between Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons is increasingly crumbling. Now the quarterback has criticized his employer.
Preparations for the upcoming NFL season are in full swing at the Atlanta Falcons, with training camps just around the corner. Kirk Cousins is still part of the team – for now.
Rumors have been circulating for months that the quarterback is set to leave. The Falcons signed the 36-year-old last offseason and gave him a four-year deal worth up to $180 million.
A few months later, however, the Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. Cousins lost his starting spot during the season, and Penix Jr. took over. The youngster is also likely to start next season.
Cousins criticizes Falcons’ move
Accordingly, Cousins’ time with the Falcons could end sooner than expected. In the first episode of the Netflix series “Quarterback,” Cousins gave his first insight into his time in Atlanta so far.
“The choice of Penix irritated me,” said the quarterback. Cousins knew that the Falcons could choose a quarterback, but he did not expect them to choose one in the first round.
Cousins revealed that if he had known this before signing with the Falcons, it would definitely have influenced his decision. At the same time, the veteran admitted, “I’ve learned in twelve years in this league that you’re not entitled to anything. It’s all about earning your place and proving yourself.”
