J.J. Watt wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers after leaving the Houston Texans. He offered his services on offense, but they turned him down.
J.J. Watt is one of the best pass rushers in NFL history. He has already been honored by the Houston Texans, and his induction into the Hall of Fame is just a formality. In 2021, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals after asking the Texans to release him so he could play for a contender. But first, he wanted to go somewhere else entirely, as he has now revealed.
J.J. Watt wanted to join the Packers: “I don’t care how low the number is.”
On the “Pat McAfee Show,” Watt said, “I wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers in free agency, but they weren’t interested. I told my agent, ‘I don’t care how low the number is. I want you to get an offer so I can at least hear it.’ But they didn’t make an offer.”
Watt had only five sacks with the Texans in 2020, the fewest he has ever had in a full season. After that, they parted ways, and Watt ultimately signed with the Cardinals for $28 million.
“I would have taken a lot less money because it’s my home.” Watt is from Wisconsin and went to college there. “I can tell you right here and now that $5 million would have been enough for me, no question.”
The Packers reached the divisional round in 2021 before falling to the San Francisco 49ers. Watt had to give up the season after only seven games with a single sack due to injury and ended his career after the 2022 season.
