The Green Bay Packers are reportedly working on an extension with head coach Matt LaFleur despite their playoff exit.
The NFL playoffs are in full swing, and in the wake of this, the Green Bay Packers’ season has come to a dramatic end against the Chicago Bears.
According to a report by ESPN, this will not prevent the franchise from extending head coach Matt LaFleur’s contract, which expires in 2027. A decision on this is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Packers president Ed Policy had already said last June that he did not want a “lame duck coach” in Green Bay. This term is used to describe coaches who are entering the final year of their contract.
LaFleur with a positive record, but never in the Super Bowl
LaFleur’s future after the current season was considered uncertain following this statement. The disappointing defeat after an 18-point lead against the Bears in the Wild Card Round will not have increased confidence in the coach.
The 46-year-old said after the defeat that he would talk to Policy. When asked if he would coach with one year remaining on his contract, he did not respond.
Nevertheless, he said again on Sunday evening that he could imagine remaining Packers coach.
LaFleur led Green Bay to a 76-40-1 record in 117 regular-season games. In seven seasons, the team made the playoffs six times. However, they never reached the Super Bowl under him.
